What is a fantasy world without a crotchety old wizard, a droll
apprentice, and a castle full of gargoyles? It's a sad fantasy world
indeed. Fortunately for the residents of Dervanny they have such a
wizard, apprentice, and castle, along with Serpentia Giganticus
Aquatica (big water snakes) and a Wumpus Arcanus Felineae (flying
cat). With all the wildlife, it's a wonder Wistril gets any
wizardry done.
Wistril Compleat is a collection of three stories chronicling the adventures of Wistril, a White Chair wizard, and Kern, his long suffering apprentice. Magic, mystery, mayhem, and other things that start with "M" await you in Wistril Compleat. In "Wistril Besieged," the village of Dervanny turns to Wistril to protect them from a mercenary army bent on pillaging. While Wistril shelters the entire village (goats and all) in Castle Kauph, he has to figure out a way to thwart the army without breaking his Oath of Peace. For Wistril is no ordinary wand waver, he's a White Chair wizard, unable to use his magic violently, even in self-defense. And as his apprentice Kern puts it, "Do you have anything up your sleeve beside phantom voices and will-o-the-wisps? And, if so, can you use it without breaking your Oath?" Something's not right at Lake Ovinshoon. Rumor is that a monster of enormous size leaves the lake at nightfall and roams the nearby forest. Wistril thinks it's all "vapid flummery" and sends his apprentice Kern to find out what is really going on. Kern loses his boot, Wistril discovered there are indeed lake monsters residing in Ovinshoon, and the villagers hire a mercenary to take out the monsters. Once again, Wistril's Oath of Peace is put to the test when he has to protect some very rare monsters from a bloodthirsty trapper in "Wistril Afloat." The day started out nice enough. Then lightning rang out in the clear sky and shattered the windows, and peace, of Castle Kauph. It seems that Wistril, betrothed to many young ladies of Lesser Houses in his youth, has just learned he is to be married. Lady Emmerbee Hohnserrat is on her way to Castle Kauph to marry Wistril, whether he wants to be married or not. And if ducking matrimonial minded ladies wasn't enough, a certain baron, also betrothed to Lady Emmerbee has shown up looking for a fight. And that's not to mention the necromancer with the baron or the wumpus cat that is running wild in the nearby forest. It looks like they have all the makings of a memorable wedding in "Wistril Betrothed." | ||||||||||
