ProjectPulp.com Review
What's Under the Bed? by John Bushore is an illustrated poetry book for
young readers of all ages. The eleven poems collected in the book are
accompanied by numerous illustrations -- both color and black and white -- by
Marcia A. Borell, Sandy DeLuca, Erin Donahoe, Jennifer Cawthorne, and Teri
Santitoro.
Both the poems and illustrations alternate
between being whimsical, thought-provoking, or (just a little bit) scary. Bushore
explores the worlds of dragons, unicorns, and monsters, as well as the day-to-day
fantastical world of children. In "Unbearably Scary," Bushore relates the terror --
and adrenaline rush -- that one experiences when walking through a haunted
house. "Heartless" is about a unicorn that men can't see, and "Good Intentions"
recounts the self-imposed loneliness of a dragon. Poems such as "Under the
Bed," "Allen," "Our Gang," and "Chewy" turn normal childhood concerns and
experience into exaggerated, funny poems that are reminiscent of Shel
Silversteen. But perhaps my favorite poem in the book is "Larvae," a playful
recount of caterpillars on a slide and all the reactions children have to them.
What's Under the Bed? is one of those
books that adults will enjoy reading to little ones, and young readers will enjoy by
themselves. Bushore's poetry is full of humor and imagery, and the five
illustrators have done his poems justice in their wonderful artwork.
