What's Under the Bed?

What's Under the Bed? :: Sam's Dot Publishing :: Collection by John Bushore
What kind of chores would you have to do if you lived in a castle with dragons and bats and unicorns? How can burping help save lives? Why does a dragon get lonely? What's the best part about a scary ride at the amusement park? All these questions and more are answered in What's Under the Bed? It's a collection of fantasy, science fiction, and very mild horror poetry composed by John Bushore, with black and white and two-color illustrations by Teri Santitoro, Erin Donahoe, Sandy DeLuca, Marcia A. Borell, and Jennifer Cawthorne. It's for younger readers of ages 8 to 80. No bad language, no "adult" themes, just good fun . . . and a few things to think about.

ProjectPulp.com Review

What's Under the Bed? by John Bushore is an illustrated poetry book for young readers of all ages. The eleven poems collected in the book are accompanied by numerous illustrations -- both color and black and white -- by Marcia A. Borell, Sandy DeLuca, Erin Donahoe, Jennifer Cawthorne, and Teri Santitoro.
Both the poems and illustrations alternate between being whimsical, thought-provoking, or (just a little bit) scary. Bushore explores the worlds of dragons, unicorns, and monsters, as well as the day-to-day fantastical world of children. In "Unbearably Scary," Bushore relates the terror -- and adrenaline rush -- that one experiences when walking through a haunted house. "Heartless" is about a unicorn that men can't see, and "Good Intentions" recounts the self-imposed loneliness of a dragon. Poems such as "Under the Bed," "Allen," "Our Gang," and "Chewy" turn normal childhood concerns and experience into exaggerated, funny poems that are reminiscent of Shel Silversteen. But perhaps my favorite poem in the book is "Larvae," a playful recount of caterpillars on a slide and all the reactions children have to them.
What's Under the Bed? is one of those books that adults will enjoy reading to little ones, and young readers will enjoy by themselves. Bushore's poetry is full of humor and imagery, and the five illustrators have done his poems justice in their wonderful artwork.
