Vacancy is open to all forms of poetry. Formal, freeverse, lyrical, haiku, genre. We are also open to epic poems stretching as long and far as necessary. The only type of poetry Vacancy doesn't care for are greeting card verses, obvious rhymes, or self-indulgent teen angst. All poetry should provoke an emotion. Whether just a spark or an overwhelming sensation, if your poetry doesn't conjure a response in the reader, it's not a successful poem.
Strong language and sexual frankness are accepted (an advisory will be placed next to pieces particularly severe). Reprints are accepted but previous publication should be noted in your cover letter. Submit up to six poems at a time. Simultaneous submissions are discouraged. Submissions should never, ever be sent already recorded into audio.
Payment for poetry published in Vacancy is $3 per poem for original manuscripts, or $1 for reprints. Payment will be made upon successful completion and retrieval of an audio recording. Vacancy buys First Audio Rights. For now, only e-mail submissions are accepted and should be sent as plain text in the body of an e-mail. Also be sure to note whether or not you have the capability to do your own audio recording and provide a snail mail address (we encourage contributors from outside the United States to add variety to the dialects available in Vacancy.) E-mail to: vacancy@blindside.net, attn: Jon Hodges.
